What is lymphedema?
Lymphedema is an abnormal accumulation of protein and water just below the skin. This causes “swelling” in the involved body part. Lymphedema most commonly develops after radiation or surgery that disrupts the lymphatic system but can also develop without a known cause and be hereditary due to malformations in the lymphatic system. Without treatment, the condition progresses over time and can lead to cosmetic malformations of the involved limb, hardening of the skin, secondary skin infections, and functional limitations that limit your quality of life.

During an initial evaluation you will receive:
- Education on the anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system and how it relates to your symptoms
- Assessment of the skin changes related to lymphedema, radiation, or surgical incisions
- Comparative ROM assessment of the involved limb to uninvolved limb
- Comparative strength assessment of the involved limb to uninvolved limb
- Circumferential measurements of “swelling” in the involved limb compared to the uninvolved limb
- Education on compression supplies needed to aid in decreasing limb size
- Education on self-treatment techniques to decrease limb volume
- Develop an individualized exercise program to support lymphatic circulation, promote strength, decrease pain, and improve ROM to aid in functional activities and improve your quality of life.
